Description
A comforting dish of tender beef simmered in a rich homemade gravy, perfect for cozy nights or family dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs tender round steak
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional)
- Fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Begin by patting the tender round steak dry with paper towels and seasoning with salt and black pepper.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and sear for about 3-4 minutes on each side. Remove and let it rest.
- In the same skillet, add chopped onion and sauté for about 3 minutes until soft. Stir in minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions, stirring continuously for about 1 minute.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring to eliminate lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and any optional mushrooms.
- Return the seared steak to the skillet, nestling it in the gravy. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover and braise for about 1 hour, flipping steak halfway through.
- If desired, mix cornstarch with cold water and stir it into the gravy during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
- Once done, let the steak rest for a few minutes before slicing. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or rice and garnish with fresh parsley.
Notes
For a lighter option, replace beef broth with vegetable broth. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
