Description
A classic Italian marinara sauce made with fresh ingredients, perfect for pasta and pizzas.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes (or 2 pounds fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped)
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano (or 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, minced)
- 1 teaspoon dried basil (or 1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- A pinch of red pepper flakes (optional for heat)
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Start by heating the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Once hot, add the finely chopped onion. Sauté it for about 5–7 minutes until it becomes translucent and soft.
- Next, add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant—about 1 minute. Be careful not to let it burn.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes. If you’re using fresh tomatoes, ensure they’re peeled and chopped finely. Stir the mixture well to combine.
- Add sugar along with dried oregano and basil. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if you like a bit of heat.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Turn the heat down to low and allow it to cook uncovered for about 20–30 minutes. Stir occasionally, adjusting the seasoning to your preference.
- Once the sauce reaches your desired consistency, remove it from heat. Blend it for a smoother texture if desired.
- To serve, garnish with fresh basil leaves for freshness.
Notes
For a twist, consider adding balsamic vinegar or tomato paste for depth. Adjust herbs based on availability.
