Description

A delightful breakfast classic, homemade French toast features fluffy slices of bread cooked to perfection and topped with syrup or fruit.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (or non-dairy milk for a vegan option)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 slices of thick bread (brioche, challah, or sourdough)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (or coconut oil for a dairy-free alternative)
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit for topping
  • Optional: A splash of orange juice, nutmeg, sweetener to taste

Instructions

  1. Begin by cracking the eggs into a mixing bowl. Add the milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt. Whisk everything together until it’s well combined and slightly frothy.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a pat of butter (or your preferred alternative) and let it melt, allowing it to coat the pan thoroughly.
  3. Dip a slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring each side is coated well. Allow any excess mixture to drip off before placing it into the hot skillet.
  4. Cook the bread for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until it’s golden brown. If it’s cooking too quickly, reduce the temperature to avoid burning.
  5. Repeat the process with the remaining slices, adding more butter to the pan as needed. Keep the finished slices warm on a plate covered with a clean kitchen towel.
  6. Serve your French toast hot, topped with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.

Notes

For healthier alternatives, use whole-grain bread, plant-based milk, and fresh fruit instead of syrup.
