Description
Create your own flavorful and healthy apple cider vinegar at home using just a few simple ingredients and a bit of patience.
Ingredients
- Fresh apples (6-10, depending on size)
- Granulated sugar (1 cup)
- Water (filtered or distilled, ample to cover the apples)
- Optional: A splash of unpasteurized store-bought apple cider vinegar
Instructions
- Wash the apples thoroughly to remove any pesticide residues. Cut them into quarters and remove any seeds you can spot.
- Place the apple quarters into a large glass jar, leaving some space at the top.
- Mix the sugar into water until dissolved. Pour this mixture over the apple pieces, ensuring they are completely submerged.
- Cover the jar with a clean cheesecloth or coffee filter secured with a rubber band.
- Store the jar in a dark, warm spot, away from direct sunlight.
- Check on your mixture every few days and stir gently.
- Strain out the apple solids after 3-4 weeks when bubbles form and the smell changes.
- Allow the strained liquid to ferment for another 2-3 weeks and taste periodically until it reaches desired acidity.
- Transfer the vinegar to a clean bottle for storage.
Notes
Watch for mold during fermentation and skim off if necessary. Ensure that the jar is not tightly sealed to allow air flow.
