Description
Luxuriously creamy and cheesy potato casserole inspired by the famous Delmonico’s Restaurant. Tender potato slices baked in a rich cream sauce with sharp cheddar and topped with golden breadcrumbs.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
Instructions
- 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and generously butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- 2. Peel and slice potatoes to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thickness, keeping them in cold water to prevent browning.
- 3. Melt butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, whisk in flour and cook for 2 minutes to create a roux.
- 4. Gradually add heavy cream and milk while whisking constantly until smooth and slightly thickened.
- 5. Reduce heat to low, add cheddar cheese in small handfuls, stirring until melted and smooth.
- 6. Season sauce with garlic powder, onion powder, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper, adjusting to taste.
- 7. Layer one-third of potato slices in the prepared baking dish, pour one-third of cheese sauce over them, and repeat twice more.
- 8. Press down gently to eliminate air pockets, cover tightly with aluminum foil, and bake for 60 minutes.
- 9. Mix breadcrumbs with Parmesan cheese, remove foil from casserole, sprinkle topping evenly over potatoes.
- 10. Return to oven uncovered and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes until golden brown and potatoes are tender when pierced with a knife.
- 11. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set properly.
Notes
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat covered at 325°F for 20-25 minutes. Can be assembled up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerated before baking. Add breadcrumb topping just before final baking for best results. Pairs beautifully with roasted meats, grilled steaks, or baked salmon.
