Description
A stunning dessert featuring layers of lady fingers, creamy custard, and fresh mixed berries.
Ingredients
Scale
- For the custard:
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- For the trifle assembly:
- 1 package (about 24 ounces) lady fingers
- 2 cups mixed fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Start by making the custard. In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, cornstarch, egg yolks, and salt over medium heat. Stir continuously for about 5 to 7 minutes or until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat and add the vanilla extract.
- Pour the custard into a bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it cool to room temperature.
- Place the bowl in the fridge for at least 1 hour to chill.
- In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add the powdered sugar, continuing to whip until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold in one cup of whipped cream into the chilled custard.
- Start assembling your trifle, layering lady fingers, custard mixture, and mixed berries until you fill your serving vessel.
- Finish with a layer of whipped cream and a sprinkle of berries on top.
- Garnish with fresh mint leaves if desired. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Notes
You can substitute lady fingers with sponge cake, and use almond or coconut milk for a dairy-free custard.
